Dr. Baughman is a native Floridian who attended Stetson University and the University of Florida. After attending the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry he completed an oral and maxillofacial pathology residency at Indiana University. Following his formal training he became a full time dental educator for 33 years serving on the faculties of the Medical University of South Carolina from 1969-1971 and the University of Florida from 1971-2002. Upon retiring from academics in 2002 he entered private practice with AmeriPath-Florida to direct a new Division of Head, Neck, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology until retiring in 2008.
Dr. Baughman has served as president of both the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. He was the first and only dentist ever named a Professor of Clinical Oncology by the American Cancer Society due to his work related to oral cancer.
Throughout his career Dr. Baughman has published numerous scientific articles in refereed journals. In addition, for 11 years, he authored the “Diagnostic Quiz,’’ a monthly column in the Florida Dental Association’s journal, Today’s FDA. The “Quiz” was a clinical exercise utilizing current diagnostically challenging cases as a continuing education tool for Florida’s practitioners.
Although retired from full time academics, Dr. Baughman remains a dedicated teacher and educator. He continues to be an active and a sought after continuing education speaker. He has been a frequent guest lecturer at numerous local, state, national and international meetings since 1971. His presentations are known not only for their educational value but also for their humor.
